#Bowtie365 - #Day322

First day at Ralph Lauren! Toured the offices and gulped down company culture with some fantastic folks. So grateful to be given this opportunity.

#Bowtie from my first outfit to work: slim khakis and a sky blue button-down, brown wing-tip oxfords with a similar belt, striped gray socks, clear-framed eyeglasses and a dotted navy bow tie.

BLAST FROM THE BOW TIE PAST WITH BANJO BILLY & JUMPIN' JACK

With everyone so focused on The Hunger Games [star, Josh Hutcherson is a bow tie fan] & b-ball brackets [as art], it’s nice to get lost in old news and unearth some hidden gems.  In the past I’ve covered dwindling #bowtielove in Congress and some impressive gifts for your menfolk on those busy indoor days.

Today’s #BowTieFriday is an investigative piece into the ad below for Banjo Billy’s Fun Boat (1961 to 1970). Take a look before I begin:

Image Credit: The Miami News. March 2, 1964.A Google search for 'Banjo Billy' or 'Banjo Billy's Fun Boat' will bring up a few forum threads of people looking to connect with others that watched or were on the show.  This was clearly not enough for one [slighty crazy] gentleman, the self-titled Stan the Man.  Stan hunted down Banjo Billy (alive and well in Melbourne, FL) and pulled together the following "interview."  I use that word quite loosely.

Are you obsessed with Billy? I almost want to start a petition to get this man back in the spotlight, Betty White-style.

Now to bring this whole story to the present day, and a bit of a somber note, occassional show guest and host of Jumpin’ Jack’s Four O’ Clock Club Jack O'Brien passed away Monday, March 19, at the ripe age of 84. Look at this guy's bow tie #swoon.

Image Credit: Miami Herald March 2012.Jumpin' Jack - whereever you are, I know there is a big bow tie in the sky looking down on us with a smile.  Now let's all get Banjo Billy back on TV!

PS: Only 28 days to go!  {Every $1 helps}

PPS: I'm lounge DJ-ing ¡WHATEVER! tonight at Deity! 10p - 4a! 368 Atlantic Ave! $10! Free Chambord Vodka 10p - 11p!

PPPS: I could never resist a coloring contest.... hope I win!

SCRUMPTIOUS BOW TIE PRESS + BOW TIE PASTA DINNER

What an absolutely fantastic week to be an @BowTieBoy in Forest Hills, Queens.  My first interview with Drake (mastermind of FoHi's Edge of the City blog) was nearly 3-months ago...and since then I have been truly blessed with the amount of press coverage I've received on #TheBowTieCollection and my Kickstarter.  This week, I had a fantastic feature on fubiz, which lead to a great spotlight on BuzzFeed, which blossomed into shout-outs on both TIME.com and Bon Appétit!

Never did I ever think my bow ties would receive recognition from one of my favorite entertaining magazines - so what better way to give back, then to feature a bow tie'd recipe!

Special thanks to NPR for this delicious vegetarian recipe (easily made vegan).

Sweet Roasted Butternut Squash And Escarole Over Bow-Tie Pasta

T. Susan Chang for NPR

Makes 4 servings

5 quarts salted water in a 6-quart pot

2 1/2 to 3 pounds butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cut into 1/2-inch chunks

1 medium to large onion, cut into 1-inch chunks

3 big handfuls escarole, washed, dried and torn into small pieces

1/3 tight-packed cup fresh basil leaves, torn

16 large fresh sage leaves, torn

5 large garlic cloves, coarsely chopped

1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

1 tight-packed tablespoon brown sugar (light or dark)

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 pound bow tie pasta (farfalle)

1/2 cup half-and-half or heavy cream

1 to 1 1/2 cups (about 6 ounces) shredded Asiago cheese

Slip one large or two smaller shallow sheet pans into the oven. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Bring the salted water to a boil.

In a big bowl, toss together all the ingredients for the roasted vegetables: squash, onion, escarole, garlic, basil, sage, brown sugar, red pepper flakes and oil. Be generous with the salt and pepper.

Pull out the oven rack holding the sheet pan. Taking care not to burn yourself, turn the squash blend onto the hot sheet pan and spread it out. Bake for 25 minutes, or until the squash is tender, turning the vegetables two or three times during roasting.

As the squash becomes tender, drop the pasta into the boiling water and cook it until tender, but with some firmness to the bite. Drain in a colander.

Once the squash is tender, turn on the broiler to caramelize it. Watch the vegetables closely, turning the pieces often. Anticipate about 5 minutes under the broiler. You want crusty brown edges on the squash, and wilted, almost crisp greens.

Scrape everything into a serving bowl. Add the half-and-half, hot pasta and 1 cup of the cheese. Toss to blend, tasting for salt and pepper. Add more cheese if desired. Serve hot.

10-YEAR-OLD MOZIAH BRIDGES AND HIS CUSTOM BOW TIE COMPANY

Moziah Bridges is the 10-year-old founder and head designer of Mo’s Bows Memphis, a handmade bow tie shop based out of his home in Memphis, Tennessee.  In fact, it's the only custom bow tie company in all of Memphis.  Moziah learned his bow tie-tying skills from his grandmother, and now offers his own custom creations, like "You're a Peach" and "Cha Cha Cha Cheetah."  This young man doesn't seem far off from making his dreams come true of designing neck pieces for Justin Bieber and Chris Brown.  Go Mo!

MANNING VERSUS BRADY: SUPERBOWL XLVI OF BOW TIES

Bars around the country on Sunday were buzzing with excitement (& disdain) as the New England Patriots defeated the Baltimore Ravens to become the AFC Champions and the New York Giants, in an overtime show down with the San Francisco 49ers, became the NFC Champs. For the football illiterate folk, that means the Giants will take on the Patriots in Superbowl XLVI in Indianapolis on February 5, 2012.

The next two weeks will undoubtedly be full of fan rivalry, lucky charm polishing, and ridiculous news cast experiments to predict the winner. Quarterbacks can make or break a team and I am a firm believer that their off-the-field style heavily influences their game play. I'll make this easy: below is a photo of Tom Brady (Patriots) and Eli Manning (Giants) both sporting a solid black bow tie. For the title of Superbowl XLVI Best Bow Tie Sporter (& most likely game winner) - Who wore it best?

Tweet me @BowTieBoy and let me know what you think.
